Newton's third law of motion states that each action has equal and opposite reaction.

In case of rockets, the force that push the rockets is done by the combustion of the rocket's fuel. As the oxygen goes inside the fuel tank and gets combined with fuel and it produces gas heat that are directed through the nozzles. Thus, this emerges accelerates away from the rockets. Newton's third law of motion need this acceleration to be convoy by a corresponding acceleration of the rockets in opposite directions. Thus, this propels the rockets.
