Nitric oxide is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) which in turn reacts with water to give nitric acid (HNO3). Nitrogen oxides therefore react with water to form nitric acid (HNO3). Nitrogen and Oxygen do not react at ambient temperatures.
