Osmoregulation means the homeostatic regulation of osmotic pressure in the body in order to maintain a certain water content (concentration of electrolytes, pH, etc. The osmotic balance in these fishes is maintained by the urea cycle. Salts are excreted in the feces and in the urine. Some salts are reabsorbed in the kidney tubules. Salts are never excreted through gills as there is no special salt excreting cells.
