How does our skin provides protection from excessive loss of heat in severe cold

it protects from heat because of melanin and from cold due to presence of fat that is deposited beneath the skin.

1. Adipose tissue present in the subcutaneous tissue prevents heat loss form the body during excessive cold.
2. Sebaceous glands present on skin secrete an oily or wax-like secretion called sebum which keeps the skin oily and thus prevents the entry of germs inside the body. 
3. Our skin contains a pigment called melanin which prevents us from exposure to ultra-violet rays.
