‘I am the land’ is a poem written by Marina de Bellangenta where the poet has personified the land and is like a mother who can withstand any sort of violation on her.

EXPLANATION:

The poet personifies the land and the poet expresses the feeling of the land by being the land. The poet states that being the land she tolerates so many things just like a mother. The land’s patience is stressed with the word ‘wait’ that is repeated several times. Despite man exploiting the land, the land tolerates all of it and her patience is unchallengeable.

She underlines the fact that man attempts to control land, although he does not own it. A man takes pride in owning the land, buying and selling the land, however, the land waits patiently. Man shouts in rage, however, the land is patient. Man has ruined the land with muddy holes and parking cars whose headlights (glare) the land withstands it.

However, when somebody plants grass, trees, or when children dance on it, the land feels happy. Nevertheless, this happiness does not last for long as the land is distressed when a man makes boundaries using fences and wires and choking the land. Yet the land withstands this.

In the end, the poet says that it is impossible for man to put a fence around the earth planet as it is too big and beyond his reach. That is to say, before the planet earth, man has no standing and man’s existence is dependent on the earth and without the earth, man can neither stand or survive.
