This phenomenon is called compressibility which forces the molecules be closer and changes its state.

ex: gas to liquid=condensation

liquid to gas=Evaporation

Explanation:

The state of matter can be changed by change in the pressure. When pressure is applied on gasses it changes into liquid state , for example liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG). When pressure is released it again changes into gaseous state.
