Rainbows are formed due to the dispersion of sunlight through raindrops.

when light passes through the tiny droplets of water in the sky the white light splits into its seven constituent colours namely violet,indigo,blue,green,yellow,orange,red (VIBGYOR) and hence a rainbow is formed
