Beetroot juice is itself used as a pH indicator. It is a natural pH indicator that is used to detect the pH of different substances and hence determine wether a given substance is acidic or basic in nature. However, beetroot juice itself is weakly acidic, that is it is a very mild acid.

Beetroot juice changes the colour of a base to yellow. However, it shows no colour change when added to an acid. To use beetroot as an indicator, you must boil chopped beetroot for 15 minutes in water and then test acids and bases with the juice by using raw beetroots we can easily distinguished between acid and base.
