Religion in India is characterised by a diversity
of religious beliefs and practices. The preamble of the Indian constitution states that india is a secular state, although there were plea going on supreme court of india to remove the words secular and socialist from the preamble to the constitution of India. The indian subcontinent is the birthplace of four of the world's major religions : namely Hinduism, Buddhism, jainism and sikhism - collectively known as Indian religions that believe moksha is the most supreme state of the Ātman. According to 2011 census, 79.8% of the population of India practices Hinduism, 14.2 adheres to Islam, 2.3% adheres to christianity, 1.72% adheres to sikhism, 0.7% adheres to Buddhism, and 0.37% adheradhto jainism. Zoroastrianism, Yungdrung Bon, the Bahá'í Faith, Sanamahism and Judaism also have a history in India, each has at least several thousand adherent in India.
