In much the same way that other closely-held opinions/beliefs/thoughts that are codified affect politics.
1. It creates voting blocks. Obviously it doesn'tguarantee that everyone who identifies as religion X or denomination Y or group Z will vote the same way but in practice we see this happening.
2. It affects what laws/executive orders are made. It does this by both having individuals in positions of power (elected officials and others) and by having legislators who have no direct affiliation with a religious group at least stop and consider their response to any particular legislation or position.
3. On a positive side, it causes issues to be discussed. We might not always come to a consensus on an issue but at least it is discussed.
