Ponds and lakes are important sources of water in India. They are widely used for bathing, washing and other utility purposes. But when it comes to maintenance hardly any steps are taken.
However, it has been observed that if any rites or rituals are to be performed in these lakes and ponds then they are properly maintained. For example, before the Chhath Puja the ponds and lakes are cleaned. When rituals and rites are performed the ponds and lakes are cleaned, their sides paved. Cattle are not allowed to be washed.
Further, fishing is prohibited as the water body is declared as auspicious and a property of Gods. Waste is not dumped. In this way the lakes and ponds are well maintained through religious beliefs.
