As area of the cross section is inversely proportional to the resistance, so:
a.when it's tripled, resistance is increased by 3 times.
b.when it's one-fourthed, resistance is increased by 4 times.
I know you have this one doubt, if length was given then as area is generally length's square , so above answers would also have been squared but it has given area so no such squaring.
