Starting in the Himalayas in Tibet as the Tsangpo River, the river flows eastward for 704 miles. At the Shuomatan Point, the river bends and enters India crossing the Assam Valley. It then flows south through Bangladesh exiting at the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta into the Bay of Bengal.

Throughout its upper course, the river is generally known as the Tsangpo (“Purifier”); it is also known by its Chinese name (Yarlung Zangbo) and by other local Tibetan names. In Tibet, the Tsangpo receives a number of tributaries.
The Brahmaputra enters India in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, where it is called Siang. It appears in the plains, where it is called Dihang.
