How does salt concentration affect the refractive index of water

There are gaps between the molecules of water which is taken by the solvent dissolved to it. When these gaps are occupied by salt molecules the molecules per cm2 increases in turn increasing the density of the solution which serves as one of the factors for the change in refracitve index of the solution.
