Shakespeare displays Shylock in both positive and negative ways. In turn, during the play we are able to sympathise with Shylock and to fear him. At the end of the play we are horrified with Shylock’s behaviour but can easily understand his way of thinking. This is because throughout the whole play he is abused in various ways. This is why when he does this horrific act; he is seeking revenge rather than pleasure.

Shylock is the antagonist of the play "Merchant of Venice". He is defined as a wicked merchant who used to lend money to the needful people at very high rates of interest. He hates Antonio, a loved merchant, as Antonio used to lend money to others at very low rates of interest and thus he was loved by everyone. Shylock is hates by everyone and insulted by Antonio whenever they used to meet at the Rialto.
