How does soil become rich in nitrates when leguminious plants are grown in it?

leguminous plants have root nodules which contains rhizobium(a kind of bacteria) which converts atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates and nitrites. thus the soil becomes rich in nitrates. plants can use nitrogen only in this form
