Sound has a dual nature by virtue. But in air, it takes the form of longitudinal wave nature. Here the sound wave passes on the waves to the nearest air particles which oscillate from their mean position, thereby causing them to pass on till they reach our ears. 

The nature of sound in air can be represented as ripples in water.

Thus by this way sound travels or propagates in air.
