How does stem perform the process of photosynthesis

Generally leaves perform photosynthesis.But under extreme conditions stem also perform photosynthesis.Stem also contains a small quantity of chlorophyll pigment.During adverse conditions,when there is lack of surface area to perform photosynthesis ; Stems and some times branches also get involved in photosynthesis.In some plants it is observed that the process of photosynthesis is done by stems and branches more than that of leaves.
