The process by which this information is communicated is called synaptic transmission and can be broken down into four steps. First, the neurotransmitter must be synthesized and stored in vesicles so that when an action potential arrives at the nerve ending, the cell is ready to pass it along to the next neuron.

The nerve impulse at pre-synaptic knob activates the neurotransmitters which travel all the way through the synapse to bind their receptors on the post-synaptic knob. This opens a series of channels in the post synaptic membrane (eg sodium and calcium channels ) which eventually initiates the nerve impulse (also known as action potential ) which travels through the following cell upto the next synapse.
