Soil erosion occurs when the water with high velocity runs down washing the soil. As many terrace or step like slopes are present in terrace farming it reduces the speed as well as the quantity of water moving over the soil surface as a result of which it checks soil erosion by preventing it.

Three processes are most important which help reduce soil erosion if terrace farming is practiced.

  1. It drastically reduces the speed of downward water flow over the soil body and thus soil movement with the water flow.
  2. It lets the water move into the soil.
  3. Above two factors allow better plant growth, which in turn provide larger plant canopy intercepting the falling rain from hitting the ground and dispersing the soil particles and increased proliferation of roots thus greater soil binding by the root system.(This point can be exempted as I'm assuming you're from lower classes)
