Genes work in pairs, for every trait is present in a pair of genes(one is the dominant and the other the recessive gene).each parent posses a pair of genes.however each parent passes only one of the two genes to its progeny. Thus, the male and female gamete carry one gene for each trait. When the male gamete fuse with the female gamete during fertilization, they produce a full set of genes having characteristics from both the parents.
