When Acid rain falls on marble it breaks the marble into fine powdery substance. This easily washes down with rain which is deteriorating the monument. It is due to the presence of high amount of Sulphur dioxide which is causing this

- Acid rain is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which react with the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids. Acid rain corrodes the marble (calcium carbonate) of Taj Mahal. It causes damage to this wonderful structure, causing yellowing of marble.
