Electronic configuration helps us find the number of valence shell electrons with which we can find the group number of the element.
If the valence shell electron is 1 or 2 its group number is 1 and 2.
If it's more than 2 then add 10 to it and it becomes the group number.
For example if the number of valence shell electrons is 7 then it's group number is 17.
The number of shells tell us the group number. If it has 3 shells it is said to be in the 3rd shell.
