How does the atmosphere protect us from meteoroid hits?
=The meteoroids don’t actually ‘burn up’ but the air that’s compressed as they enter the atmosphere can become hot enough to be incandescent. Air in little cracks and pockets is also highly and quickly compressed which tends to disintegrate the meteorite.
Carbonaceous chondrites may contain water which may flash to steam and some organic compounds which may actually ‘burn up’ - this will be their first and only time that that they are heated in their existence.
Meteoroids that have been discovered quickly after they fall to earth are quite cold, the quick heating in the atmosphere not providing enough calories to heat the very cold interior. (As long as they are not found near Hollywood, California, that is.)
