In the story, Three Men In A Boat, the author compares the boat of life to a boat going up and down the river. He says that because man fills his boat with unnecessary things, there are chances for the boat to topple. If he keeps only what he needs he can have an enjoyable journey.

Similarly if the boat of life is light and packed with only the things that are needed the journey of life will be safe and enjoyable. So a person should have a homely home, simple pleasures, one or two friends, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, a pipe or two, enough to eat and wear, and a little more than enough to drink, to lead a happy life.
