Autonomic nervous system and emergency situation
Explanation:
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is involved with regulation of internal organ functions through involuntary and reflexive actions.
The ANS deals with crisis or emergency situations by triggering the:
- Acute stress response
- Fight or flight response
- Rest and digest response
These responses are done through various parts of the ANS like the sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric nervous system and the hormones
- Acute stress response or the Fight or flight response
When a person perceives a crisis, threat or danger; the hypothalamus (receives crisis information) sends signals to adrenal glands to secrete Adrenaline into the bloodstream.
Adrenaline circulating in the bloodstream triggers the sympathetic nervous system which controls the action of lungs and heart and causes the lungs to dilate to let in more oxygen, heart to beat more, and releases more sugar and fat to metabolize and produce more energy to cope up with the stress.
- Rest and digest response
Then to calm down the body, the ANS triggers the rest and digest response which triggers the parasympathetic system to activate digestive processes in stomach, intestines while constricting and resting other activates like constricting pupils and bronchi and slows heartbeat.
This helps to reduce the anxiety and stress caused by the crisis or emergency situation.
