It is selectively permeable membrane and allows only selected material to go inside.The cell wall gives rigidity and strength ,offering protection against machanical stress.In multicellular organisms ,it permits the organism to build and hold its shape.

Cell wall is selectively permeable that means it allows only required materials to move inside the cell ...and hence it protects the cell from harmful,foreign and in required material...
