In recent years, the multipurpose projects and large dams have come under great scrutiny

Explanation:

  • There are no annual flooding on the river because of the building of dams. And as such, "nutrient-rich" "silt" is not present in the downstream region. This reduces soil fertility..
  • Dam construction prevents fish from receiving adequate nutritional content in the downstream region. Regulating & damming of rivers impact the natural water flow causing inadequate sedimentary flow down and increased sedimentation on the lower portion of the reservoir, which contributes to more rockier streams & poorer habitats for aquatic lives in rivers. Dams also find it impossible for marine animals to migrate to spawn
  • Many areas of the natural vegetation are submerged by artificial reservoirs, leading to the loss of exotic fauna & flora  which contribute to a decomposition over a long period. Dams causes earthquakes which cause water borne diseases & pests & pollution
  • The construction of large dams leads to local communities being displaced. Local people frequently have to sacrifice their land and subsistence and "meagre" access to and management of resources for the nation's greater food.
  • Dams provide farmers with irrigation. As a result, most farmers have shifted the trend of agriculture towards  "water intensive and commercial crops". This has contributed to soil salinisation due to "ecological imbalances"
