the outer protective layer of tree is called the bark or cork is the protective tissue of a tree it is made up of dead tissues and hence it helps in protecting the plant from any mechanical injury.

the cork cells are dead and don't have any intracellular space..
the cells walls are coated with suberin
it protects underlying tissues from mechanical injury, infection
