How does the cork act as a protective tissue?

The cork cells are dead and do not have any intracellular spaces. the cell walls are impermeable due to coating of suberin. the dead cells of coc are filled with tennis, resins and air. due to presence of these properties, cork act as a protective and insulating tissues.
