The creation of variation in a species promotes survival because if due to a sudden change in their niche (eg. temperature change, spray of DDT etc.), most species will die but very few species, who may have evolved heat-resistant or DDt-resistant genes may survive and when these remaining organisms reproduce, most of their progenies will have the heat/DDT- resistant gene.

Hence, creation of variation promotes survival.

Explanation of some terms:

1. Niche- Niche is a particular habitat where a type of organisms tend to live.
2. Species- A group of organisms who can freely reproduce are called a species.
3. Freely-reproduce- It means that the chromosome no. of both sexes is the same and they can give rise to new generations.
4. Reproduction- is the process of producing more organisms of the same kind and sustain the survival of the species.
5. Progeny- The individuals of the next generation are called progenies.
6. DDT- It a poisonous substance, used for killing insects (eg. mosquitos)

An example:

Suppose a spray of DDT is made in  group of 1000 mosquitos, only 2 will be able to survive (*2 refers to very few of them) because they may be having the DDT-resistant gene. When they reproduce, most of their progenies will also have the DDT-resistant gene and next time when the spray is made, most of them will be able to survive.

Another example:

A group of fishes live in a pond. Suppose a factory is set-up near it and it dumps hot waste, causing thermal pollution in the pond. In this case, most fishes will die but only few, which have the heat-resistant gene will be able to survive. When these remaining organisms reproduce, most of their progenies will have the heat-resistant gene and most of them will be able to survive in hot water as well.
