Crystal field splitting is the splitting of d-orbital or f-orbitals into multiple orbitals. This breaking of orbitals is caused due to the static electric field produced by distribution of neighboring charge.

When a beam of white light passes through a compound, an electron moves from lower energy state to higher energy state due to absorption of a particular wavelength of light. Rest of the light is reflected back. This reflected light is thus responsible for color of the compound.
