How does the diaphragm help in breathing

The diaphragm separates the thoracic cavity, containing the heart and lungs, from the abdominal cavity and performs an important function inrespiration: as the diaphragm contracts, the volume of the thoracic cavity increases and air is drawn into the lungs.

Explanation: When the Diaphragm contracts, oxygen rich air is taken into lungs. When diaphragm relaxes, Carbon-dioxide air is pumped out of the lungs.
