if the electronic configuration is 1 or 2 then the position of element in Modern Periodic Table will be in group 1 and group 2 respectively. and if it is more than 2 that is 3, 4,5, 6, 7, 8, 9 then it will added to 10 and the resulting value is the number of the group of periodic table in which the element is placed.
for example let's take sodium and nitrogen
then sodium has atomic no. 11 and electronic configuration is :
2, 8, 1
hence its valence electron is 1 then it is placed in the group 1.
then nitrogen has atomic no. 7 its electronic configuration is :
2, 5
Hence its valence electron is 5 then 5 is added to 10 that is 5 + 10 is equal to 15 then the group no. in which the nitrogen is placed is group 15
