How does the electronic configuration of an atom of an element relate to its position in the modern periodic table?Explain with an example.

Electronic configuration plays an important role in deciding the position of an element in the periodic table.
As you know we have 8 groups(excluding the groups that contain transition elements) and 7 periods in the periodic table.
The number of electron shells in an atom decides the period to which it belongs. For example: If an atom has 3 electron shells then is will be present in the 3rd period of the periodic table
Similarly, the no valence electrons in atom decides the group to which it will belong. For Eg ; if an atom has 7 valence electrons then it will be placed in the 7th group.
