the valence electron indicates the group no.
whereas the no. of shell indicates the period no.
ex-Na
valence electron-1
so group 1
and no.of shells-3
so period 3
it's as simple as that..

the number of periods determine the number of shells
the group number defines the number electrons in the outermost shell.
eg:element belonging to 2nd group and 3rd period?
ans: element is in 3rd period
therefore number of shells=3
that is=2,8,?
to find the number of electrons in the outer most shell.just check the froup number.
group no=2
there fore electronic configuaration=2,8,2
so if get a electronic configuration just check the
