Gas exchange takes place in the millions of alveoli in the lungs and the capillaries that envelop them. As shown below, inhaled oxygen moves from the alveoli to the blood in the capillaries, and carbon dioxide moves from the blood in the capillaries to the air in the alveoli.

Answer:

(1) Exchange of gases between the alveolar air and the blood takes place through thin squamous epithelial layer of alveolus and similar layer of the capillary wall.

(2) Respiratory gases will always diffuse from an area of higher partial pressure to an area of lower partial pressure in these two regions.

(3) Due to difference in partial pressure, carbon dioxide diffuses from the capillaries into the alveolus whereas oxygen will diffuse from alveoli to the capillaries.
