The mouse and the snake is a beautiful poem written by vikram seth. It shows  us the cleverness of a mouse and the greediness of a snake which makes him fool.

In this poem a mouse fells into a farmer's trap and is unable to free himself after so many failed attempts. suddenly he sees a beautiful snake which was very hungry and just woke up from his winter's sleep. The mouse is now in a dilemma that if he stays inside he will be killed by the farmer and if he breaks out he will be eaten by the snake. The snake patiently wait for the mouse to make his decision as he knows the mouse had no other way than to let him it it.

So the mouse tells to the snake to please let him go as he has to fed his family who were hungry. But the snake refuses and tells him that he is not so fool to let go of an easy catch. Now the mouse offers the snake that if he let him go he will show him a field where hundreds of mouse feed everyday. This offer makes the snake greedy and he starts dreaming of hundreds of mouse. So the mouse told him to come in from a narrow opening by squeezing himself and lift the door from which the mouse can escape and after that he will hold the door for the snake to escape from the cage and they both can go to the field of mice. Being blinded by the greediness of himself the snake does so and goes inside of the trap and let the mouse escape. After escaping the mouse starts running without breaking the snake out of the trap and goes to his home.
