The Himalayan mountains influence the climate of India by the following ways—

(1) The mountains stand across in the path of the southwest monsoon winds and prevent escaping them towards north. The moisture-laden winds collide with the southern slopes of the mountains and cause orographic rainfall. This rainfall is responsible for helping India to grow large number of crops.

(2) The mountains stop the chilling winds coming from Central Asia from entering the Indian landmass. This keeps the temperature of the northern part of the country less cold and comfortable in winter season.
