In the story 'THE LAST LEAF' Johnsy, young artist, catches pneumonia and harbours strange fancy that she will die the moment the last leaf of the ivy vine on the wall falls. She loses her will to live and doctor too looses the hope for recovery. Behrman was an old man who wish to paint a masterpiece, to give courage to Johnsy he painted a real-like leaf by seeing which the home inside Johnsy increased.
From the above incident, we get to know the fact that the willingness of a person to recover or live works as much as medicine. Infact, get values lot.

Answer:
The leaf is a symbol of despair that turns into a symbol of hope. Johnsy thinks the ivy leafstands for her life, slowly falling away. When the leaf remains, however, it becomes a symbol of hope for her.
