how does the liquid in a thermometer changes so that it can be used to measure a temperature

the liquid in thermometer is not actually a liquid. it is a metal called mercury which has a very less boiling point and is liquid at room temperature. it expands when the temperature rises and shrinks when the temperature is low. this is how it can be used to measure temperatures.
