Answer
In reality, the moon doesn't change shape at all. It is orbiting the Earth at the same time as it is also rotating, and the Earth itself is rotating and revolving around the Sun. This is why stars move in the sky and why the sun and moon rise and set in different locations each day.

The Moon appears to change shape because we see different amounts of the lit part as the Moon orbits Earth. When the Moon is between Earth and the Sun, the lit side is hidden from us. As it moves around Earth, more and more of the lit side comes into view. It takes 29.5 days for the Moon to orbit Earth.
