- By dressing style, the author brings out the contrast between the Indian way of life and the American society after she sees another Indian lady walking down the child in a pram stumbling around.
- Mala initially had difficulty adapting easily to the new way of life as the two countries' culture where they varied entirely from one another. Mala becomes home-sick when she moves to the U.S, however later she does adjust.
