Ruskin bond tells us the story of a young man Anil and a thief, Hari Singh, a narrator. The narrator was 15 years old and due to circumstances, he became a thief. He wanted to befriend with Anil. Anil earns money by writing articles for magazines.

Both of them become friends and they stayed together. Anil has taught him how to read and write and also taught him how to cook. Hari bought groceries and steals few money on a daily basis. One day he saw Anil has kept a bunch of money under the mattresses.

This tempted Hari Singh and that night he stole the money and left to the railway station. When the train arrived, his good spirit came and he could not catch the train. He thought about how Anil has helped him in his education. His love for education becomes the moral force of Hari Singh.
