Explanation:
The old man was very depressed and worried because he was thinking about how his animals would survive without him as he had to leave them because of the artillery. He was telling the narrator his worries and the narrator tried to console him by telling him that his animals will be alright. He said that if he had left the cage open then the pigeons will fly away and will be safe. He also tried to motivate the old man by telling him to get up and walk to the trucks which will take him to Barcelona which was a safer place at that time. The old man tried to get up but as he was very old and tired he simply swayed from side to side and then sat down backwards in the dust. Nothing could be done of the old man as his death was impending and one day he will surely die.
