Answer:

Nature fascinates me and so does the banyan tree an integral part of nature with so many lessons to learn from it .If you have ever noticed a banyan tree closely it is intriguing indeed .

The Banyan tree is the national tree of India and because of its huge structure, many long and deep roots and branches it symbolizes the country's UNITY .It's tangles of branches, ariel roots and trunks may spread across several acres An old banyan tree can reach more than 656 feet in diameter and can be as tall as 98 feet The widest tree in the world - the Great Banyan - is located in Kolkata and is about 250 years old. The tree grows by placing its branches down. Its seeds germinate in cracks and crevices of the host tree, sending branches everywhere around it, called aerial prop roots.

So we can say it is the perfect symbol for ancient Indian families which also grew like the banyan trees, where the children stayed with the parents, married and brought their spouses home to have children who grew up and married and added to the family "compound ".This however is very rarely seen now with children these days preferring to live as nuclear family units .

A Banyan tree like other trees too starts out from a seed…and grows into a giant tree teaching us that we can also grow similarly…little by little…growing tiny ‘roots’ here and there which could be the love and support of the relationships we nurture over time. It continually shoots out new roots into the ground, seeking growth… we can also try to grow like the ‘roots’, forever progressing but still remaining rooted to a spot giving sustenance to those below us and helping them also to grow along, a symbiotic relationship of nurture and caring. It's humility is seen by its virtue to protects all creatures who come under its shade

It's huge size protects from the hot sun ,hence it is often planted near homes, temples, villages and roadsides. It has medicinal and commercial value as well

The Banyan tree is considered SACRED . Lord Shiva is sometimes depicted sitting in silence, under the banyan tree, with the saints sitting at His feet. The narration of Krishna sucking his toe, lying on a banyan leaf is recounted in the Markandeya Purana .The tree is a veritable symbol of calm and wisdom as it was under this tree that Buddha is said to have meditated and got enlightened .

It symbolizes ETERNAL life In Hindu culture, the tree is often called

'KALPAVIRISHKA ' which means 'a divine tree that fulfills wishes'.Married Hindu women worship the banyan tree to lead a long and happy married life.

Perhaps if we follow the example of the Banyan tree, we will achieve an iota of what the tree finally represents - Longevity....Rabindranath Tagore

In Bhagwad Gita (15 ) It is said that there is an imperishable banyan tree that has its roots upward and its branches down and whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas The branches of this tree extend downward and upward, nourished by the three modes of material nature namely goodness, passion and ignorance. The twigs are the objects of the senses. The real form of this tree cannot be perceived .No one can understand where it ends, where it begins, or where its foundation is. With determination one must cut down this strongly rooted tree with the weapon of detachment. Thereafter, one must seek that place from which, having gone, one never returns, and surrender to that Supreme .

O you shaggy-headed banyan tree standing on the bank of the pond,

have you forgotten the little chile, like the birds that have

nested in your branches and left you?

Do you not remember how he sat at the window and wondered at

the tangle of your roots and plunged underground?

The women would come to fill their jars in the pond, and your

huge black shadow would wriggle on the water like sleep struggling

to wake up.

Sunlight danced on the ripples like restless tiny shuttles

weaving golden tapestry.

Two ducks swam by the weedy margin above their shadows, and

the child would sit still and think.

He longed to be the wind and blow through your resting

branches, to be your shadow and lengthen with the day on the water,

to be a bird and perch on your topmost twig, and to float like

those ducks among the weeds and shadows.

TITLE: The poem is going to be about a tree, maybe a poem about nature.

PARAPHRASE: A speaker is asking the tree if he remembers a child that used to rest on his branches but has now left. He then asks if the tree remembers the women coming near to fill up their water jugs, the sunlight dancing on the water, and the animals playing as the child would sit and think. The child wanted to play on the branches of the tree, and be a part of the nature and wildlife of the area.

ATTITUDE/TONE: the tone is pretty soulful, solemn, and ponderous on the quiet state of nature.

SHIFTS: There is a shift between "the child would sit still and think" and "he longed to be..." Everything before this point was describing the scenic life around the banyan tree, but after "he longed to be..." the poem goes into detail about how the child wants to become the epitome of the nature, be the "wind and blow through the branches" the "bird and perch on the twigs" and a duck to "float among the weeds and shadows."

TITLE (2nd look): The Banyan Tree is now a symbol of memories of the child that once played on it. It is a safe haven to the creatures of nature, yet all of the creatures who were indebted to it have now left it, leaving the tree in a state of quiet solitude. The speaker is asking the tree if he remembers that he was once full of life and love.
