How does the nature prevent food getting into Trachea

Air enters the nose through nostrils.After that there are two passage one for food and other for air The air passes from pharynx to larynx.The opening leading to the larynx is called glottis.It is protected by a lid called epiglottis , which prevents food from entering the trachea.

The wind pipe consist of a lid like tissue made up of elastin cartilage on the aperture of the wind pipe. This is known as epiglottis. Now, the intresting fact is as we swallow the food, the wind moves up and not the epiglottis which closes the mouth of the wind pipe and hence prevent the food from entering in it
