When Madame Loisel’s husband had to work for a
decade to repay the loans taken to replace the borrowed necklace, she
understood what being poor actually meant. Loisel realized that she was never
poor before as she imagined herself to be. It was the ten years when all her
husband’s earnings were spent in loan repayment, that she became actually poor.
While she had to do demanding work earlier as she called it, she now had to
work physically to close the loans. As a result, she does not want the life of
the rich people. In short, Madame Loisel longs for the life she had before she
borrowed the necklace. But, it was too late.

Mrs. Loisel’s life conditions changed drastically after the necklace incident. Since they had borrowed lots of money, they had to live quite frugally. They shifted to a garret and dismissed their servant. She had to do the household chores herself now. Ten years she had to live in ghastly poverty as a result she now looked quite old. But these hardships had made her stronger and more practical.
