yes it help in determing the type of mirror because if the erect and virtual then it is convex mirror because rays of convex mirror dont meet . so its magnification will always in positive
and if the image is real and inverted and then it is concave because concave mirror form image down the mirror and the rays actually meet also the magnification is negative
