Answer:
The peddler emerge as a man of finer human qualities despite being a vagabond. At the end of the story we see him a transformed man. His conscience pricks him and he is penitent about his past mistakes. He succeeds in overcoming his petty self. He not only leaves a gift for Edla, with a letter of thanks to her for trusting him and treating him respectfully, but also the stolen 30 kronor, meant to be returned to the old crofter from whose house he had stolen them. The gift signifies he had finer human qualities in him. He had the sensitivity to appreciate and recognize Edla’s greatness. He had the courage to take the right decision of returning the stolen money.
